HISTORY
The
Warterfield March Winds Regatta, held on the first full weekend in March, bears the name of Charley
Warterfield who died unexpectedly in mid-December, 1998.
This remarkably talented architect and sailor served as our Commodore in 1983.
Bob Cotton followed Charley as Commodore in 1984. Together, they reflected on the fact that our club had
no organized sailing event during the very month of the year most noted for wind.
The Board of Governors responded favorably to their proposal to establish the March Winds Regatta as a
permanent cruising class sailing event to be held as a two-day regatta early in March.
Charley and Bob served as regatta chairmen for the event with Jack Caldwell and Bob Wolery serving as
the race committee.
Since the inaugural March Winds Regatta (won by Chuck Konesky), the tradition has continued that the
retiring commodore take responsibility for serving as regatta chairman for the event.
